Lenthall Infant & Nursery School

Rosen - Year 1

📚 Welcome to Rosen Class – Year 1

Can you guess who our favourite author is? That’s right—it’s Michael Rosen! His playful poems and stories inspire us to be curious, creative, and confident learners.

👩‍🏫 Meet the Team

  • Miss Dawson – Class Teacher
  • Mrs Priest – Teaching Assistant & Forest School Leader

Together, we create a warm, supportive classroom where every child is encouraged to shine.

🧠 Our Learning Journey

Each morning, we dive into phonics, maths, and English through fun, hands-on activities and exciting challenges that help us grow as readers, writers, and problem-solvers.

In the afternoons, we explore our Lenthall Learning Challenges—cross-curricular topics that spark curiosity and creativity. These include:

  • 🏡 My Home, My World!
  • 🧸 A Toy’s Story!
  • 🏰 Dungeons and Dragons!
  • 🚢 Ship Ahoy!
  • 🌌 Out of this World!
  • ☀️ Sunny’s Summer!

We use a mix of whole-class teaching, group work, independent tasks, and continuous provision to make learning meaningful and fun.

🏃‍♂️ Physical Education

Every Friday, we have PE with Coach Lewis from Chesterfield Football Club Community Trust. In colder months, we use the school hall, and when the sun shines, we head outdoors for games, sports, and active learning. We also enjoy yoga and movement breaks throughout the week.

📖 Reading at Lenthall

Reading is at the heart of everything we do. Children read in small groups three times a week and take home:

  • decodable reading book (Collins Big Cat), matched to their phonics level
  • ‘Love to Read’ book to enjoy with an adult

We encourage daily reading at home. Please record this in your child’s reading record so we can celebrate their progress and send home new books on their change day.

🏡 Homework

Our main focus is on reading and phonics. Phonics packs and support materials are shared at the start of the year and via ClassDojo.
Occasionally, we may send home extra activities in maths, spelling, or handwriting to support specific learning needs.

🚌 Trips and Visitors

We love to bring learning to life with exciting trips and visitors! Past adventures have included:

  • 🐯 Yorkshire Wildlife Park
  • 🐠 The Deep
  • 🦋 The Butterfly House
  • 🥖 Local visits to the bakery and Dronfield Station

👟 PE Kit Reminder

Children should come to school in their PE kit on Fridays:

  • Black shorts, joggers or leggings
  • White or royal blue t-shirt
  • Plain, dark trainers or pumps
  • Black zipped hoodie or tracksuit top

No jewellery, including stud earrings, should be worn on PE days.

🍎 Snack & Water
