Lenthall Infant & Nursery

Lenthall Infant & Nursery
A Warm Welcome To You All

Design and Technology

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Design is knowing which ones to keep.

Intent

At Lenthall Infant and Nursery School, we want to ensure children succeed in all areas of personal development as well as academically. Throughout their Lenthall learning journey and beyond children will enjoy and achieve in Design and Technology, being exposed to a variety of Design and Technology learning experiences, which deepen their skills and knowledge over time.

Children will participate in a variety of projects throughout the year which involve learning and developing knowledge of using simple design tools, mark making media and different techniques with adhesives; progressing in Key Stage One by designing, making and evaluating more sophisticated models. They create different moving models such as puppets, vehicles, moving cards/ objects. Children evaluate their achievements and reflect on ways to improve their work. Children are exposed to a variety of foods such as, breads, smoothies, gingerbread men, kebabs which is in line with our healthy school philosophy. We are constantly developing our own Lenthall garden and vegetable patch which stimulates children’s curiosity and enriches their life experiences.

Our vision is that all children will grow in confidence and develop their characteristics of effective learning by testing their ideas, reviewing techniques and evaluating and appraising their own words.

Implementation

Lenthall DT Learning Journey

Impact

Design and Technology at Lenthall Infant and Nursery School is assessed using the following.

  • Informal judgements by staff during lessons • Immediate next steps provided via verbal feedback.
  • Pupil and peer assessments.
  • Formal skills and assessment checklists.

Come the end of each DT unit, teachers make a summary judgement about the work each pupil has completed in relation to the success criteria. The DT subject leader monitors progress and attainment on a termly basis through a triangulation of the data, evidence in books, and through children’s voice.

Our Ultimate End Goal:

What will our designers to be able to do when they leave us?

By the time our designers leave Lenthall Infant and Nursery School they will have become resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable citizens.  They will have been inspired by inventors, designers, engineers, chefs, and manufacturers who have developed ground-breaking products and in doing so made the world a better place.  Our designers will be able to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others. They will use their creativity and imagination with confidence, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They will be given the opportunity to collaborate with others and to reflect on the products they have created. Throughout the year, the children will utilise their skills and knowledge within the field of Design and Technology to make the world a better place by designing, making, and selling products as part of Lenthall’s Learning Challenge Enterprise Events.

It's not just about ideas, it's about making ideas happen. Do it!
