Lenthall Infant & Nursery School

Design and Technology

Intent

At Lenthall Infant and Nursery School, our goal is to ensure children succeed in all areas of personal development as well as academically. Throughout their Lenthall learning journey and beyond, children will thrive in Design and Technology, engaging in various experiences that deepen their skills and knowledge over time.

Throughout the year, children will participate in diverse projects that involve using simple design tools, mark-making media, and different adhesive techniques. Progressing in Key Stage One, they will learn to design, make, and evaluate more sophisticated models, creating moving models such as puppets, vehicles, and moving cards or objects. They will evaluate their achievements and reflect on ways to enhance their work.

We will expose children to a variety of foods, such as breads, smoothies, gingerbread men, and kebabs, aligning with our healthy school philosophy. Our growing Lenthall garden and vegetable patch stimulates children’s curiosity, enriching their life experiences.

Our vision is that all children will gain confidence and develop their effective learning characteristics by testing ideas, reviewing techniques, and evaluating and appraising their own work.

Implementation

Impact

Design and Technology at Lenthall Infant and Nursery School is assessed using the following.

  • Informal judgements by staff during lessons • Immediate next steps provided via verbal feedback.
  • Pupil and peer assessments.
  • Formal skills and assessment checklists.

Come the end of each DT unit, teachers make a summary judgement about the work each pupil has completed in relation to the success criteria. The DT subject leader monitors progress and attainment on a termly basis through a triangulation of the data, evidence in books, and through children’s voice.

Our Ultimate End Goal:

What will our designers be able to do when they leave us?

By the time our designers leave Lenthall Infant and Nursery School, they will have become resourceful, innovative, enterprising, and capable citizens. They will draw inspiration from inventors, designers, engineers, chefs, and manufacturers who have created groundbreaking products, improving the world around us.

Our designers will be adept at critiquing, evaluating, and testing their own ideas and products, as well as the work of others. They will confidently use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that address real and relevant problems across various contexts, considering their own needs and those of others. They will have opportunities to collaborate and reflect on the products they create.

Throughout the year, the children will apply their skills and knowledge in Design and Technology to positively impact the world by designing, making, and selling products as part of Lenthall’s Learning Challenge Enterprise Events.
